Oh, as for hash:
it's like *hash*browns.... chopped meat mixed w/potatoes & browned (usually fried)---a lot of people put onions into it as well

Once again, it's just a bit more substantial than the universal alternative, hashbrowns. I think the majority of Southern food tends to go this route.
