Ok, so I'm replying to myself...
Anyways, I don't think I was too clear on the substitution part. You need to switch the * with = and the ( ) for an actual color, font, size, whatever. So you shouldn't have any star things or parenthesis in your html code at all.
Also, there's a website where you can use cute smiley faces in your messages.
