I won't say "you're going to college, so right away you need to break up/make plans to date others etc." At such a huge university, it's not a bad idea to have a support system to keep you from getting into trouble. (Translation: it is way easier to say no to horny 21 year old guy at party who wants more than you are willing to give if you still have a boyfriend at home.)
However, if you get to the point where you are resenting his presence in your life and feeling tied down, then you need to have a talk with him about the status of your relationship. Same goes for him. It probably won't be pain free, on either end, but if it is, your relationship probably was on the shallow side to begin with.
