I don't know anything about greek life in Madison. However, I think most large state schools in the midwest are similar in that greeks make up between 10-15% of the total population. That usually means that the greek system is robust and fun with lots of things to get involved in but you are in no way an outcast if you choose not to pledge. Most people in the greek system have friends who are not affiliated or in other houses that they meet in classes, dorms, jobs or whatever. Your social life is not the least bit restricted should you choose to join.
Also, no! Sorority girls are not all blonde and most of the stereotypes are untrue. I would strongly encourage you to rush so that, if for no other reason, you can see what a diverse group of women they truly are.
