one of my book clubs does themes. people are free to read a book that falls into that month's broad or very specific theme, and then we discuss. It's weird but it works.
Another club is specifically sci-fi, and we meet every other month. The list is decided pretty far in advance, so people know the next few books we'll be discussing.
