It sounds like:
1) as other posters have said, the sororities may have only had a small number of spots
2) the chapters are small enough so that when a sorority says you don't fit, they know that. It happens. There isn't a place for everyone and going Greek isn't for everyone.
If no one encouraged you to rerush in the fall, I recommend you look into other school activities.
