I think people didn't want to be in the pledge house because it meant they would be on film. It wasn't the house itself they didn't like, just the MTV participation.
As far as Melissa - sure, we shouldn't judge her from one diary entry (which is at least straight from her and not edited up by MTV!), but then again, it seems a little hypocritical for her to complain in one graf about how MTV is distorting her and making her look bad and then in the next assume MTV's portrayal of Sigma is accurate!
