A few years ago, I attended a wedding where one of the guests was the mother of a friend of the groom. (The groom and my husband were friends in high school.) My husband and I chatted with this woman for a bit, and she mentioned that she was active with her sorority. I asked her which sorority, and she said "Delta Sigma Theta".
She then said something that I assume is an "Are you a Delta?" challenge question. My intended response was, "I've heard a lot about Delta, and every member I've met has been a great woman - I'm an AEPhi." (I wanted to indicate that I was curious about her greek affiliation as a fellow greek, but that I was not a Delta.) But before I could get a word out of my mouth, my husband barged in with "Yeah, I think she's heard of your sorority but whatever, how is your family?"
I could have kicked him in the teeth. He's a Mason, for crying out loud - he should at least have a vague idea that a particular statement, delivered in a particular tone of voice, is a challenge, not random conversation.
