I read something once where the author compared Marvel and DC to mythologies -- DC is Greek mythology and Marvel is Norse mythology. The central ethos of DC, he said, is that you (the superhero) have a responsiblity to yourself and society, to you'd better be ready for it and face it. The Marvel ethos, by contrast, is that you'd better be ready because lots of undeserved things beyond your control are going to happen to you. DC is about the virtues and flaws or extraordinary people, while Marvel is about the personal dramas of ordinary people in extraordinary situations.
I think there's some truth to that.
And I always liked Greek mythology better than Norse.
