I tweeted about this a bit last night. Not a bad show, and not a trainwreck like the BET Awards have become. Just a few observations:
1. Gladys Knight is still a class act. She could have blown most of those in her tribute off of the stage.
2. Why were there no closeups of Natalie Cole during that tribute?
3. Cee-Lo Green is becoming the "go to" guy for award show tributes on BET. Exhibit A: the Patti LaBelle tribute during the BET Awards.
4. DrPhil, you called it on Nicole Bitchie. My reactions in order: "Who?" "You write a blog, it's not the Nobel Prize". "Bossip is better, but at least you're not Media Take Out."
5. The Original 7even could have played longer; conversely, the Heavy D memorial was too short. If the show had been broadcast live, it would have been better.
6. I hope some of the young acts will be around this time next year.
7. My sister pointed out that Earth, Wind & Fire never performed on Soul Train when it was on the air.
8. Was Don Cornelius in the building?
We'll see what 2012 brings.
