The Big Lebowski occupies a weird place, because it's both an auteur work and an oddball (semi-stoner) comedy. It may be the Coens' weirdest film, which is saying a lot given their catalog.

It's definitely, definitely a polarizing movie - I think it's an insanely clever combination of disparate forms (heist/mistaken-identity tales, anti-hero noir, slapstick, a sort of faux Americana, and to top it off, the story itself is an adaptation of Chandler's The Big Sleep).

At the same time, the film is bizarrely reliant on mood/atmosphere, and the characters are quixotic at best - I can completely see why some wouldn't be able to embrace any of the individual elements, particularly when one of the keys is the soundtrack.
