The definition varies from group to group, but, in general:
Legacy: A prospective member whose grandmother, mother, sister was in a sorority, or whose grandfather, father or brother was in a fraternity. Legacy stipulations differ for each sorority and fraternity.
The bond of having a family member in one's sorority/fraternity is special and one that sororities/fraternities want to encourage. However, it is not a guarantee that you will be chosen to be a member of your family member's sorority/fraternity. You will be chosen based on your own merits. If you are a legacy, you are encouraged to look closely at that chapter. However, you should also look closely at the other chapters on campus to make sure the group you choose is the best house for you, not just your family member.
