At UF, there will be a limited number of chapters participating: as few as three or as many as six. Chapters that take spring classes give those new members the same full experience but without a bid day. Being a sophomore may make it slightly more challenging but won't take you out of the running. One chapter said (informally) that they only took freshmen, and then they took a sophomore friend of mine who had quit formal recruitment the year before. What is most important is looking pulled together, having interesting on- and off- campus activities to talk about, and to know a few sorority women who can put in a good word for you.
One thing to consider: you may not need to wait for spring if you're considering informal recruitment. You'd need to start this week, but some chapters may be looking to fill some spaces in their fall class if there were women who had to drop after bid day. Contact the Pamhellenic Council and they can connect you with chapters where you could find a place this semester!
