This is not always true and is kind of a myth for a variety of reasons including prisons being on lockdown, gangs, incidences of prison rape vs. consensual sex, and the prevalence of sexual violence and murder among the 'highest of the high' inmates. If there is any real risk he'd be put in seg for his own protection.
Regardless, no matter how horrible a person is, wishing rape or harm on them in retribution treats rape and assault like a punishment which only furthers the idea that rape victims did something to 'deserve' their rape.
