I'm certainly not advocating that alumnae make "excuses" for anyone's "toiletish" GPA. The possibility that you may "tank" your GPA in your freshman and/or soph year is one the very best reasons to go through recruitment at the first opportunity- as a first semester frosh when your HS GPA will be what's on the table and probably closest to the norm for the pool of pnms you are being compared to.
That said, you could end up with a 2.5 cum GPA at the end of freshman year because you have AP credits, which means you have credits earned with no grade points, added to a semester where you didn't take a lot of classes and had a freshman reality check when first semester grades came in. If you didn't complete some classes and got an incomplete or a withdraw, you have units attempted but no grade points earned. If you partied night and day or spent the spring shoe shopping instead of going to class, I feel no sympathy for your situation at all. There ARE situations that are worthy of special consideration. I personally want to give each pnm careful consideration, looking at the total package. Sometimes personal recs do shed some light on what may not come across on a rush application and a 30 minute open house party. Doesn't mean it's gonna happen... but nobody really can say for sure.
