I just checked Amazon.com and it's still in available: Let's Go Play at the Adams' by Mendal W. Johnson.
Not only is it the scariest book I've ever read, but it even has a Greek tie-in. Here's one of the reviews:
"I read this book along with a few classmates when I was in 9th grade (many years ago) and it still haunts me today. It was one of the most horrifying books I have ever read and still is. I can't say I recommend it because honestly, I don't remember whether it was well-written or not. But if you've ever thought of being a nanny you might not want to read this."
IMHO, it's whatever you want to label horror mind candy. One of James Patterson's scared the spit out of me, too, but I've put the title out of my mind. *shudder*
