So, is this the point where we can stop using "HONOR STUDENT" as some sort of splooge-worthy indicator of future astronaut- or president-type status?

Look, high school just isn't that competitive. Beyond that, there is a link between intelligence at a young age and certain types of crimes (and between perception of own intelligence and imagined propensity to get away with crime - usually including a mitigating element such as bipolor or borderline traits), and between feelings of deservedness and criminal behavior.

Stop massaging the balls (whether literal or figurative) of every smart high school kid, and you'll be much less surprised when they're pushing oxy or impregnating 3 girls or pistol-whipping mom.

"Getting into Cornell" has nothing to do with "should know better than to commit a crime." In fact, it might be just the opposite.
