Our chapter was very big on the secret handshake, mainly because we felt it was very cool.
Before every formal chapter, we had the appointed Chaplain stand outside of the chapter room door. She both approved your attire (to make sure it was OK) and initiated the handshake. I loved it.
I also loved formal chapter. We did one formal chapter a month, but it was absolutely phenomenal. Some women complained, but I adored it. For one, formal chapter always seemed to be the one with fun candlepasses. We also just seemed to get more done, probably because of the formal tone set from the very beginning. The first chapter with the new sisters was always a formal one. It was
very impressive and gave them a chance to wear their brand-new pin.
Ohnoitsjess, if you guys don't do formal chapter, I
highly recommend it. It's a really good bonding experience (both with the Sorority and with each other) and it really helps set a professional tone.
On the subject of candlepasses, our chapter always decorated the candles. Normally, the woman doing the candlepass told the Chaplain and her little sister. The Chaplain set up the event, and the little sister decorated the candle.

We did the same arrangement. What song do you guys sing during candle pass?
Also, how strict was everyone's chapter on pin attire?
