I figured the girls who initially "made it" were models/actresses that were hired to pretend they were picked so the prank would look more real. It wouldn't have worked if Jay said "None of you made it, everyone was cut." Besides, I know Tyra's eccentric but I'm pretty positive she wouldn't fly girls out to LA, tell them they made it, then reveal that they didn't and send them home.
I feel like something was missing by not having casting week. You don't get to know the girls beforehand, hear their stories, etc. I was always annoyed by the huge amount of "pick me based on my sob story, not my looks" but not having it made the premier less interesting.
