There's a difference between obscure and just weird.
Clockwork Orange is a popular film. It is also weird as hell- I hated that movie sooo much, I felt the need to take a shower after I watched it.
Mullholland Drive- interesting and odd movie, but obscure? I don't think so. It got a LOT of press and a couple of Oscar nominations.
This type of movie is GENERALLY not my thing. I like my books dark, moody and ecclectic. I like my movies funny and witty. I don't like gross. I don't mind profane. I don't prefer deliberately disturbing.
Someone pass me a Kevin Smith film! Where's my copy of Clerks ????

Then it is a great power, and fights small powers, but pretends that they are great powers, in order to rekindle the ashes of its ancient emotion and vanity.-- G.K. Chesterton
