In my sorority, we use machetes to symbolize the strength of Latina women (particularly since women have historically not be allowed to dance with machetes in many societies - Mexico, for example). I can appreciate if an org. uses them for cultural reasons, but I have seen some organizations use them for "shock" value...like, "oooh they have KNIVES!" lol
