I think snapping was before that because according to Chi Os on my campus they've (their chapter, which was on campus in the 70s) always snapped...they're the only ones, so it's memorable because during times like recruitment and greek week when girls got a little catty that was the most popular way to make fun.
(All in good fun fun, I promise).
My chapter is really into Brown Eyed Squirrel (Brown Eyed Girl) so I have at many times found myself singing "squirrel" instead of "girl" and doing motions all by myself (or just involuntarily squealing when I hear it) while the people around me obviously begin to wonder if I'm nuts. Ha! Nuts!
