One easy thing is just to write press releases once or twice a semester to the school newspaper when you do some kind of philanthropy work. I think that's called preventative public relations. The idea is that if something bad was to happen then you'd have already built so much good will with the newspaper and the reading public that they'd probably give more attention to your group's side. It just keeps a lot of public good will on reserve.
