This is where I think the GC ideals and reality (at some schools) have to be separated to some degree to answer your question most effectively. Virtually everybody at GC will say hazing is not worth it and that you should not join a chapter that hazes. However, at some schools literally your only shot at going Greek (in a fraternity) will involve some degree of hazing. It either is or is not campus culture and you need to think about this before you accept a bid.

At the end of the day, if you are so uncomfortable that you would rather drop than endure more hazing, do just that. Drop. Nobody can force you to do something you really do not want to do. But I think it is wise to keep your ear to the ground to figure out which chapters haze or, if you are at some schools (and frankly many SEC campuses are like this) the best you may be able to do is find out which chapters haze the least.

This is one case where I WOULD listen to the rumors. Where there's smoke there's fire, and although nobody will make you actually do the elephant walk or kill a goat or whatever the ridiculous stories are, the chapters mentioned in those rumors usually ARE the ones that haze the hardest.

If you have good friends in a chapter you are considering, ask them sincerely about how hard it is. They will probably not give you details but will be able to give you some sort of idea. If you do not know anybody that well, don't bother asking because all they will tell you is "we don't haze", and that is not always the truth.
