I just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents here. Ashton Kutcher was "discovered" in a bar and put through a showcase in Iowa City, Iowa, capital of the acting universe, right? I don't know if he had to pay.
That being said, I had a friend in college who acted on the side (she's in 16 Candles in the dance scene in the gym, for instance) and she said the pay to model or pay for lessons on how to put on make up or whatever is a complete rip.
So I guess you decide which side of the coin to rest on. I think if you've got the money and consider it fun (and not desperation), then great! And it sounds like this whole process gave you the motivation to actively seek work. If paying some cold hard cash lit a fire under you, then it was probably money well spent.
Break a leg on the audition!
Oh, and I may be auditioning for some voice over work soon. This organization is looking for different accents and is now looking for Americans. You should hear some of the radio ads here in Dubai! And really, if you're going to have an American saying the words, you really can't have them saying shedule instead of schedule. If you want shedule, hire a Brit! /climbs off high horse
