My hairdresser is actually the owner. I usually tip her, but once in a while, I forget while she's ringing up my card. She waves it away when I ask her to ring it back in, but I make up for it the next time.

I've read that you should never tip the owner, and she's not doing anything fancy or out of the ordinary, so would you tip?

On the same topic, I had to have another girl do my hair when my stylist wasn't available, and I prefer the way she highlighted it. I mean, the other girl rocked my highlights; she threaded them, versus the chunkier way my lady does it, despite my explaining/asking. Is it rude to have another girl do my hair at the same business if my usual stylist is the owner?
This is coming from 1) having worked at a few hair salons and 2) being a previous business owner.

Yes, tip the owner. The owner actually makes LESS than their employees. Overhead has become SO high for business owners that most likely what she makes in sales is going straight to overhead, as well as the sales her employees make. Stylists make decent money on their sales but also live off their tips. The owner is no different, except their sales money goes towards overheads and their own bills/life.

Yes, it is rude to go to another stylist when your previous one is sitting nearby. If you REALLY want to go to her, try your hardest to make the appointment when your stylist is definitely not available. Or take the mature route, and explain to your stylist that you really enjoyed the threaded highlights and want to keep that style.

We had a client who liked to stylist jump. She was a huge pain in the ass to begin with though.
