I read the book and saaw the movie and am a HUGE Tom Clancy fan. I thought that the movie was better than the book b/c it was more interesting (and I am never one who says that). Quite honestly, TSOAF was not one of Clancy's better books.

The reason that the movie deviates from the book is that in the book, Jack Ryan is further along in his career (DO of CIA, I think, or something like that). They originally intended to have Harrison Ford (I think -- or someone in that age bracket) play Jack Ryan but he turned it down. Then Ben Affleck expressed interest in playing the role and the filmmakers thought he'd be right so they rewrote the part making it all happen in the beginning of Ryan's career. The Denver v. Maryland thing was another change in terms of the location of the blowup.

I think the movie was worth every penny I paid to see it. I highly recommend going to see it!
