I don't know why I didn't think of this earlier - I must have been distracted by rampant lions - but technically Delta Chi's Coat of Arms uses red and gold (gules and or) when our colors are red and buff. Gold is used as a correct heraldic tincture in place of buff. I think the use of gold in the CoA is one of the reasons you see almost no use of true buff in Delta Chi today. The difference is slight, but buff is more beige than gold (see here).
