I think it's too long of a time frame. You need to tighten it up and do it all within a month or six weeks. And you'll lose a ton of interest over a year or semester.

I'd also suggest making voting done with pennies/change/etc. So if people want to vote for Team A they put money in Team A's jar or something. Because your teams will have to spend money on the duct tape itself so getting everyone else to contribute is a good idea.

Those are just my thoughts.
