I grew up on the little golden books! I loved the Berenstein Bears as well, only their politeness bugged me a little. They read, but it is stuff like Harry Potter and Twilight. I'd have to go into my archive, but there was a study done to see if Harry Potter did increase reading among children, and it didn't increase over all. Kids would read only when a new Harry Potter book came out, and not find other books to read in the interim.
