How SGRho's came to use canes isn't rocket science. There are members/chapters of SGRho that don't step with or twirl canes at all and have no desire to learn for that matter and there are chapters that hold this as a dear tradition that is passed down from line to line. And no this did not start in the 90's. Who said that? Today, a soror can easily find another soror to teach them cane steps (and by the way, some are unique to us) and how to twirl but on those campuses where SGRho and Kappa were/are cool and even considered themselves to have a sister/brother relationship (don't know when this started but was definitely prior to the 90's and yes this did and does exist on some campuses...get over it!), Kappas did indeed teach SGRho's how to twirl. I have witnessed such lessons myself and the Kappas who do the teaching are usually proud and even flattered to see sorors handling their canes so well (not me though, I can't stand Kappas ). Some of my sorors handle them a little too well (just check youtube LOL). Anyway, today of course sorors are teaching sorors regardless of a Kappa/SGRho relationship or lack thereof, so in this way their tradition became our tradition among those members and chapters that embrace it. My undergrad chapter only used staffs when stepping (Spr. '93 in da house!); we never had a desire to use canes and to this day, we are still a non-cane stepping/carrying/twirling chapter.

This was a very interesting read. rhoyaltempest, I'm with you about the SGRho/Kappa relationship thing. When I was in undergrad, we didn't have a close relationship with the SGRhos. We actually did more things with the Deltas than we did with any other sorority. Funny thing is we actually did more with them than the Ques did with them. I remember I met an SGRho from IU, who was visiting, and she came up to me, hugged me, and called me her brother. She was confused because she thought we had the same relationship at CSU as they did at IU. It just depends on which school. LOL @ your dislike of Kappas. Just curious...why?
