I don't think that such differences necessarily have anything to do with whether a chapter is an HBCU or not. I might have thought that a few months ago, but then I met Brothers from Kappa Psi who had various colored letters.
It's all about bringing chapter differences to the table. . .the mother of a girl in my chapter makes para, and since her nickname is "Queen of Hearts", her mom made her a pink t-shirt with the letters in white with red hearts. . .it wasn't my cup of tea, but it had meaning for her.
The lady also made her daughter some letters in the school colors. I actually don't think it's a bad idea to have fraternity shirts in your school colors, but I think that's best at convention when you're trying to make a statement about your chapter.

If it ain't Blue and Gold...you won't catch me in it. There is a REASON why our colors are Royal Blue and Old Glory gold. All those other colors are for the birds. I doubt you'll find this among HBCU chapters (not saying we're better than anybody else)
