Don was not always respectful and nice to Betty. I recall in the first (I think it was first) season, when Betty was a more sympathetic character, Sterling Cooper was pitching Heineken, and Don volunteered Betty to cook an "Around the World Cuisine" dinner for the client. He made her cook that ellaborate meal, then on top of it he humiliated her in front of all their guests by making her the subject of a bet regarding Heineken. That was a huge scene for me in terms of illustrating their relationship and how they treated each other. Betty had done what was needed for Don to do well at work, and he repaid her by making her the butt of a joke.
