I'm not sure I think middle school is a great concept, personally.

I don't think it is.
In fact, in DC, many of the former elementary schools have become "education campuses" which house Early Childhood/Pre-School (three year olds) all the way up to 8th grade. If a kid gets left behind once and has a late(early?) birthday, you're looking at potential 15 year olds in the same building as 3 year olds and everything in between.
