The difference in size just determine how much "pull" it has, which should be based on the size of the area it's treating. The 30 pints versus 40 pint is based on running continuously over a 24 hour period. The tank will not hold that much at once (obviously). I don't know anything about the kind with a drain hose. If your basement is 900 square feet, I think a 30 pint one would be too small.
We have one in our garage and in our house. I HATE feeling humid. Both have dials that allow me to adjust how often it runs, not at all, or continually, or somewhere in between. Mine holds about 2 gallon of fluid (on the small side) when full, and I empty them about every 2-3 days, and I think they both have 45-50 pint capacity. I have also never heard of a quiet dehumidifier. Wish I could give you better advice!
