The Indian style is a sari. Linen or cotton top and skirt, then a long swath of material that you wrap around your waist (covering the skirt) and toss over your left shoulder. They can be very beautiful.
Can't help you with the sarong though - the Northeast doesn't exactly have balmy weather most of the year
