I think it also stems from the fact that Jigga thinks he is the rap god in NY. I beg to differ as there are a plethora of better MC's in NY! But I digress....

The Five Percenters call men Gods and women Earths. A lot of rappers in New York are also five percenters so it ended up in their lyrics and in turn in everyday vocab.
