When I mentioned the annexes, I was not talking about "sponsored" events. I am talking about something that I am pretty sure doesn't exist anymore.....casual, non-official hanging out. I don't know how it is at other schools, but on nice Friday or Saturday evenings the front lawns of the houses on Main Street were full of greeks, hanging out, talking, "hooking up" whatever. Basically it was open sorority night at these fraternity houses, and everybody would go. Nowadays this is impossible. When people are getting together in some guy's cramped little apartment, you aren't going to have groups from all 6 (or 8 or 10) sororities there. Yes, girls can still drop by the fraterntities whenever and visit.....but it isn't the same. What I am talking about is a kind of party that as I mentioned before does not seem to exist anymore. It was one of my favorite parts of being a greek and I still can barely believe it when I drive down Main Streeet on a weekend night and the fraternities look like a ghost town.

As far as the money/insurance situation, the fact is that the men's groups who have gone dry and are pushing for the others to do so have done so for ONE reason: dollars. It all comes down to liability, insurance, and soaring rates. Let me tell you, at my husband's fraternity where the alums are used to being wined and dined, there have been plenty of complaints and comments of disbelief about the whole dry thing. And I am not talking about 20-and-30somethings.....I am talking about men in their 40s, 50s, 60s and older who can't imagine not being able to have a beer at the homecoming gathering. It will be interesting to see how the dollars look when alumni involvement drops....these older alums are the lifeblood of the chapter's pocketbook in some cases. I know of one very famous and prominent alum of my husband's chapter who always used to be seen at events.....these days he is nowhere to be found.

By the way, thanks to my "fans!!!" LOL!!!!!!
