Letters on the back...
I was "made" with the understanding that the crest (which has letters on it) should always be close to your heart. I realize that this may be one of those unofficial protocol traditions that some of us may (or may not) follow. We all know that there are some things that are just flat out NO-NOs, even though they aren't specified/pointed out in the P&T manual. The letters on the back thing stems from is a kind of symbolism/icon. Recognizing the lifetime commitment we make to our orgs, we shouldn't ever want to out them behind us, but instead be actively involve, keeping our zeal for our sorority/frat in the forefront of our lives.
We don't like the greek rugs because we cringe at the thought of someone wiping their dirty shoes/feet on our letters. That's because the letters serve as an icon--kinda like the American flag.
That's the rationale that was handed down to me...
