You "make an (the) argument (for, that, etc.)," "so-and-so argues that..." or "engage in the argument that..." But, that's completely different than saying you are arguing with someone or having an argument. Different tone and context.

Where I come from argument doesn't really have that much of a different tone or context. I think for you it means what a "fight" means for me...but I am a little bit country.
