In my field where we casually discuss topics that people consider controversial and terrifying everyday:

You "make an (the) argument (for, that, etc.)," "so-and-so argues that..." or "engage in the argument that..." But, that's completely different than saying you are arguing with someone or having an argument. Different tone and context.
