my worst experience was as a canvasser (read: door to door beggar) for an environmental organization during one summer in high school. I lasted about a month, but i left before i even got my first paycheck because i HAD to leave b4 i hurt somebody. They hyped us up in meetings, made us feel like we were "making a difference" and "saving the environment"... then someone would drive us out to the high-end suburbs and developments and LEAVE. we spent time walking door to door, soliciting donations, having people sign petitions, and disseminating information on the newest state and federal items up for vote concerning the environment, clean water, etc. That job was the WORST b/c it was my first experience with racism and sexism. Being a little dark-skinned girl with natural hair, i didn't fare as well as some of the other canvassers going door to door. Being female, the particular org. i worked with was male dominated so i never reall has an opportunity to "grow"... Did i mention i NEVER got paid... and this wasn't advertised as volunteer work? but alas, it was an experience, and i guess it helped open my eyes to the "real world."
