Some news on Black Thought’s once highly anticipated solo-debut Masterpiece Theater. While, there are lots of rumors circulating on why the LP has sat dormant for so long, including talk that Thought did not even record enough material to finish the endeavor, or that he just scrapped the dolo idea entirely. Here is the skinny... Thought’s solo LP is completed and has been collecting dust on the desks at MCA for a hot minute now. Also, word is that there are no plans at this juncture to release the LP in the immediate future, or worst case at all. And in related news, Mos Def’s MCA debut has been indefinitely delayed because of disagreements they are currently having….
Word is the Alchemist has laced Linkin Park with a dizzying track for their upcoming remix endeavor. In the words of one very respected cohort “its as evil as Linkin Park might ever get on a record.”
Nas is Not? In a joint venture, Roc-A-Fella Records and Sequence Records will join forces to release Nature’s sophomore LP Wild Gremlinz (5-28-02). Also, look for the Roc to formally announce the signing of M.O.P. and Teflon in a NY hot minute.
While ?uestlove prepares to release his BBE side-project, Babies Making Babies, the liner notes to the LP are a MUST read. ?uest has came up with a crazy rating system, I Wonder if Questo Still Gives A Fuck About Me, which is basically a point system he derived for completing various tasks. For instance, though ?uest is kind enough to give all everyone 100 points to start off with, unless you are “thoroughly handling his business affairs” (200 points), have “taught him to how to record and mix classic material” (100 points), been one of the girls he’s “loved before” (50 points), or the classic “If I came out of your birth canal, give yourself 1,000,000 points”, its hard to chalk up enough points to reach the esteemed 500 point club.
It still takes a nation of millions to hold them back! Public Enemy has put the finishing touches on their latest album, Revolverlution, and plans to release the LP on 7-23-02. One interesting facet to the LP is that it will include the production of four winners from a contest the group held last year. Look for the LP’s lead-single, “Gotta Give The Peeps What They Need” feat. Paris to hit radio soon. Other guests slated to appear include, Rahzel, ?uestlove and Common.
For those interested, looks like Mariah Carey’s deal with Def Jam is all but a formality. While Mariah may need an “Irv Gotti” like makeover to reclaim her previous spot on the charts, word is she has jettisoned off to an island retreat to put the finishing touches on her Def Jam debut, where she has recorded material with Jermaine Dupri and DJ Quik.
Up and coming NY Indy group, Crimewave, is said to be in discussions with Sade for her to appear on a remix to their upcoming single “It Ain’t The Same.”
While I was initially skeptical about Eminem’s new single (“Without Me”) due to its uncanny resemblance to “Purple Pills”, I must admit that seeing the video helped me---any video with Jenna Jamison has my seal of approval. Also, while the B-Side (“What You Say”) to Eminem’s “Without Me” includes a diss to Jermaine Dupri, the track also includes a stealth like Canibus diss “"Amateurs drink veteran piss from a Dixie cup, if you ever mix me up or confuse me with a Canibus or Dre with a Dupri". And, these are not the only words Em has for Canibus on The Eminem Show. Also, Eminem has a few choice words for Nelly as well on a track entitled “Square Dances”.
Surprisingly, Jermaine Dupri has already released a comeback to Dre and Timbaland’s diss, and while it is a laughable diss track, word is JD is a wanted man in LA---hopefully everyone will play nice and keep it on wax.
While MF Doom has begun working on his second official solo LP, Mmm Food, look for his experimental endeavor, Viktor Vaughn, to drop in September.
While the KRS-One track (“Clear Em Out”) was first rumored to be a Nelly diss, KRS not only quickly refuted, but also diffused as well by reaching out to Nelly’s camp to clear up the situation. It seems KRS’ gesture was for naught, as Nelly calls out KRS on his verse from Beanie Sigel and Freeway’s “Roc The Mic” remix. Never one to shy away from a battle (ask Prince Be), KRS has responded with “The Real Hip Hop Is Over Here”, where KRS not only criticizes Nelly’s “N-Sync commercial” style of rap, but also asks for fans to boycott Nelly’s upcoming LP.
