When I went to meet my Pi Chi the following evening to get my party schedule for the third round (Greek Pillars Night), she was waiting in a big room full of PNMs and Pi Chis--it was so loud! Girls were laughing and talking and happily comparing their party schedules. There were several of us from my Pi Chi group, and our Pi Chi handed the other girls their schedules first. Then, when she looked at mine before giving it to me, she said "I think we should go outside". I was really worried--why wouldn't she just give me my schedule? (As a note, I'd been really open with my Pi Chi throughout recruitment, talking to her about how I felt about each house, getting advice, etc). So on with the story. Once we were outside, my Pi Chi handed me my party schedule, and said "I'm so sorry". I looked down and saw one, yes one house on the schedule. Somehow I had gone from seven houses in the previous round, to only one! And this was still the round before preference. I couldn't believe this had happened!
My Pi Chi and I had talked before about how I didn't feel that this was the house for me, so it was really hard to see that they were the only house to ask me back. I started crying and she tried to comfort me, but I knew in my heart that this house was not the place for me, and so I made the decision to withdraw from recruitment. While my Pi Chi picked up the withdrawal forms, I called my mom to tell her what had happened. I was so disappointed, and worried that she'd be upset I'd been cut from my legacy chapter! But my mom wasn't upset, and told me that whatever I chose to do in terms of Greek life, she'd support me. My Pi Chi came out, I signed the withdrawal papers. We said goodbye, and she told me that she would keep me updated if any of the chapters were doing snap bids, or COB. Unfortunately, although she did check in to see how I was doing the next day (totally sweet, and unrequired since I'd withdrawn), I never heard anything from her about snap bids or COB, and I'd kind of given up on being a part of Greek life on my campus.
But it all turned out for the best, because this recruitment story has a surprise happy ending! It has to, or else I would not be on Greekchat now! But you'll just have to wait for the twist...
