 I guess "care about" is being used loosely, but I have no doubt that his concern isn't of a loving, I don't anything to happen to you ever, nature. He made it clear that he needs 3 more people to get off the island. He "has" Kate, Sayid, and Jin (well, 
had Jin). It is of no coincidence that Jack, Hurley, and Sun are on the other island/not in his camp. That is why in the last episode he went to see Sun and tried to bring her over to reunite with Jin. He's using whatever he can to lure each of the (former?) candidates to his "side". Somehow them being reunited will help him get off the island.
