We had a hard enough time with the guys having a suit handy (esp the non-Greek guys). I can't imagine if I would have invited a guy to a formal, and then said "oh by the way, you have to dress up as Idaho."
We had "themes" but like GeorgiaGPhiB said, the only point of them was to have something to put on the favors (glasses, squeeze bottles, t-shirts or boxers) other than "spring 1991 formal." And yes you have the Stairway To Heaven date correct, and probably it was in use for 10 years afterward.
That was the prom theme that would not die just because 1) it's Led Zeppelin so guys don't think it's gay 2) it's super easy to make decorations.
