Didn't his family really oppose the movie in general? I thought Spike did it to avoid getting sued for misrepresentation. But I may have made that up. I know he did say he wanted to emphasize how Malcolm was let down by every strong male figure (his dad, West Indian Archie, Baines, Elijah Muhammed) in his life.
