My Dublin informant didn't know the origins of 'bird', he just knew that it was in common use by the 1950's in Dublin and then England and that 'chick' was derived from it. Much as ree-Xi said of herself, my friend gave the impression that it was not derogatory. I got the impression that 'bird' denoted the 'new' woman after WWII, as opposed to their old fashion mothers.
