1.) Its very easy to be smart here. There's so much ignorance, and just plain stupidity, you don't have to try very hard to be good at what you do.
2.) The scenery. Its absolutely beautiful in the New Orleans area, especially on the Northshore - lots of trees, rivers, lakes.
3.) Its a fun place to live. Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest, and a host of other festivals make it tons of fun. Plus, a lot of the people are just really fun - we like to have a good time.

Juniorgrrl...I normally think you're pretty cool but I have to agree with RedHotChiO on this one. I'm really offended by what you said about Baton Rouge. I was born and raised here in the Baton Rouge area and while it may not be the best place on Earth it's done fine by me for the last 21 years. As far as calling Baton Rouge "rural"...not hardly. There are far more rural places than Baton Rouge. I can think of areas near New Orleans that are definitely worse off than Baton Rouge (i.e., Pearl River, Kentwood, Greensburg, hell even Folsom which is right on the other side of the lake is pretty rural). Please don't generalize and imply that ignorance and stupidity are rampant here. Yes...ignorance and stupidity may still exist in some areas here but please don't make it look like we're all characters out of the WaterBoy or that we all wrestle alligators and date our cousins. Your comment only makes you look small-minded and honestly, ignorant. My only concern is...if you dislike Baton Rouge so much...why did you decide to come to LSU?
As for myself...I think Louisiana is a great place. There is so much history and culture here in Louisiana. There are so many beautiful and wonderful areas to visit. New Orleans may be the most well-known place in Louisiana...but there are definitely hundreds of hidden treasures all around Louisiana. Not to mention that the food and people here make it all worthwhile.
That's my .02
