How is the logo going to be used? Is it just going to be used on the web or will it be used in other formats? If it were going to be used in a variety of media (web, print, etc...) I'd honestly do the whole thing in Illustrator, even if that means redrawing the pre-made logo. I have to do that all the time for my work, and it's a PITA, but always ends up looking so much better in the end.
